Every Sunday house concerts used to be performed in the Mendelssohn home. Felix composed a large number of pieces for these: piano quartets, string quartets, Lieder, and this stroke of genius with its unusual instrumentation of four violins, two violas and two cellos, equivalent to two complete string quartets. He wrote it for a friend, the violinist Eduard Rietz, as a birthday gift. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Octet in E flat major performed by the Auryn Quartet and the Minguet Quartet and Mendelssohn's Quartet D major performed by the Auryn Quartet and Minguet Quartet.
