By 1979's Reggatta de Blanc (translation: White Reggae), nonstop touring had sharpened the Police's original blend of reggae-rock to perfection, resulting in breakthrough success. Containing a pair of massive hit singles — the inspirational anthem 'Message in a Bottle' and the spacious 'Walking on the Moon' — the album also signaled a change in the band's sound. Whereas their debut got its point across with raw, energetic performances, Reggatta de Blanc was much more polished production-wise and fully developed from a songwriting standpoint. While vigorous rockers did crop up from time to time ('It's Alright for You,' 'Deathwish,' 'No Time This Time,' and the Grammy-winning instrumental title track), the material was overall much more sedate than the debut — 'Bring On the Night,' 'The Bed's Too Big Without You,' and 'Does Everyone Stare.' Indeed, where many punks were inspired amateurs, the Police (Sting on bass and vocals, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums) were accomplished players who quickly developed a sophisticated approach to the power-trio format. The material constructed with guitar, bass and drums often at tempos that would never be matched in their later studio recordings, stands apart. Andy Summers? guitar textures are here more traditional and without their later ethereal quality, but his chord choices on ROXANNE for example, or his expansive solo lines on SO LONELY would have baffled most of the burgeoning punk guitar school. Irony continues with the odd cowboy tone that pops up now and then, as strange as the off-rhythms Sting casts them in (does he mock himself? Could an Englishman ever truly "get" the cowboy thing?: ever hear Elton Johns "Tumbleweed Connection!!!) Wandering, flirtation, betrayal, recovery are all here, along with a truly funny "All Four Seasons." Having bothered to follow up on the hunch that there was more to this album than first meets the ear, I feel I've heard secrets that reveal the man. Of course, it's always a temptation to call the novel the story of the novelist, but this album really has the feel of personal truth, through rock-solid poetry and imaginative music. 1.
